CHARLOTTE – A NEW MUSICAL tells the story of an extraordinary woman. Charlotte Charlaque was born in Berlin and grew up in San Francisco. At the age of 30, she returned to Berlin, where she worked as a dancer, singer and translator. In the 1920s, Berlin was renowned for its vibrant nightlife and liberal atmosphere. Numerous nightclubs, including the famous El Dorado near Nollendorfplatz, reflected the openness of the city’s society at the time. It was in Berlin that Charlotte met the renowned sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld and began working at his Institute for Sexual Science. The institute attracted many prominent figures, among them writer Christopher Isherwood, whose works would later provide the inspiration for the musical CABARET. Charlotte also shared a close relationship with the painter Toni Ebel. She was among the first people in the world to undergo gender-affirming surgery.
 
Berlin’s liberal and exuberant cultural life came to an abrupt end with the Nazis’ rise to power. As a Jewish woman, Charlotte was forced to flee Nazi persecution in 1934 and initially moved to Czechoslovakia. After being arrested, she was able to leave for the United States in 1942. From then on, she lived in New York, where she worked as an artist and became known as the Queen of Brooklyn Heights.
 
CHARLOTTE tells the remarkable life story of a trans* woman who was not only an artist, but also an extraordinary human being. The new musical also makes clear that many things dismissed today by conservative and reactionary voices as mere trends were already a reality and part of society a hundred years ago.

Thomas Neuwerth

Idea, Book

Alongside his work as a lawyer, Thomas Neuwerth has many years of experience in musical theatre. Since 2008, he has worked as production manager on a wide range of theatre productions, including the Austrian premieres of DAS ORANGENMÄDCHEN and LEBEN OHNE CHRIS, the German-language premiere of DIE GESCHICHTE MEINES LEBENS in Vienna, THRILL ME in Berlin and Hamburg, the European premiere of STRAIGHT in Vienna, Hamburg and Berlin, as well as a new production of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH in Fürth, Leipzig and other cities. In addition, he served for more than eight years on the Supervisory Board of Vereinigte Bühnen Wien (VBW).
 
At the age of twelve, Thomas wrote his first play. At nineteen, he wrote the screenplay for the film DIE LETZTE NACHT.
 
After a long creative hiatus, Thomas returned to developing musicals several years ago. LADY BY NIGHT has been completed for some time, while GSIBERGER, created with co-managing director Patric Scott as composer and lyricist, is currently being finalised. HOW TO LOVE A MURDERER is in development, and research is currently underway for CHARLOTTE.

Anessa Marie Scolpini

Anessa Marie Scolpini is a composer/lyricist, music director, pianist and orchestrator based in New York City. She is currently Associate Music Director/Associate Conductor for CABARET at the Kit Kat Club on Broadway.

Her song cycle FINDING BEAUTYFUK, written with Danny Bristoll, premiered at NYMF in 2019. She is currently writing REIGN with Will Shishmanian, a rock musical based on Christopher Marlowe’s EDWARD II. Other musicals currently in development include A FIRST GLIMPSE OF LIGHT and N-UN!@$LE, for which she is also writing the book.

Anessa is also deeply passionate about education and helping to ensure the continued vitality of the arts. She has worked as a guest artist at institutions including NYU, Pace University, Fordham University, CAP21, LIU Post, Broadway for Arts Education, the International College of Musical Theatre, The Growing Studio and Musical Theatre Factory. She also served as a mentor and music director for the American Theatre Wing’s Musical Theatre Songwriting Challenge, and her arrangements and orchestrations can be heard on the 2021 and 2022 albums.

Tobias Gerisch

After graduating from secondary school, the Vogtland native initially studied to become a teacher of English and Latin in Dresden. While there, he also studied with Cornelia Drese and gained his first professional stage experience in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN at the Staatsoperette Dresden.

After completing his degree, he began studying musical theatre at the Institute of Music Osnabrück in 2021, with voice training under Prof. Noelle Turner. As part of his studies, he has already played the title role in Molière’s TARTUFFE and appeared in the university productions SWEENEY TODD and SOHO CINDERELLA*. For the latter, he revised the lyrics for the German-language premiere at the Schlossfestspiele Ettlingen, where he also joined the cast. In addition, he works as a vocal coach, dubbing actor and singer, and, since 2023, as a translator for the publishing house MUSIK UND BÜHNE.

Most recently, he appeared as Jim Farrell in TITANIC at Theater Osnabrück and in PETER PAN at Staatstheater Kassel. In the final production of his musical theatre studies, he played the Duchess in the German premiere of ALICE BY HEART.
